Anupam Kher resigns as FTII chairman citing busy schedule
According to a report, Veteran actor Anupam Kher on Wednesday has quit his post as Chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), citing a “busy schedule” a reason for resignation.
In a resignation letter addressed to the Minister of Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Kher says, “Given this assignment it would not be fair to me, the students and management team, for me to hold a position of such responsibility and accountability, without being actively involved in the operations.”
“At the time when I was officially approached by the former I&B Minister, Smt. Smriti Irani to be appointed as the Chairman, I did share with her that I was due to be stationed in the US for nearly 6 months for an international TV show. The latest news now is that show has been given a further extension of 4 months. This translates into me being stationed in the US for nearly 9 months between 2018 and 2019 and then for a similar period for a minimum of three years more,” he explains.
Anupam Kher was appointed in October 2017 as the successor to former Chairman Gajendra Chauhan, who had a controversial tenure, as the head of the Pune-based institute.
Kher tweeted, “It has been an honor, a privilege & a great learning experience to be the Chairman of the prestigious @FTIIOfficial. But because of my international assignments, I won’t have much time to devote to the institute. Hence decided to send my resignation. Thank you.”
When Kher had been appointed as Chairman, he had told India Today of how he wished to make a significant contribution to the institution. “I’m primarily a teacher, I’ve been teaching for the last 30-35 years. With whatever knowledge I’ve gathered in these years, as a theatre actor, film actor or as a teacher, I want to make a contribution to this iconic institution,” he had said.
The actor has recently wrapped up shooting of ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ a political drama on former PM Manmohan Singh.
His resignation letter has been accepted by Rathore, who thanked Kher for his services to FTII, sources told news agency
